To celebrate 2017 as the year of History, Heritage & Archaeology in Scotland,
Inverewe is hosting a week long celebration of archaeology. ALIVE is a
celebration of the rich archaeological heritage at Inverewe. This event invites
the public to join Trust Archaeologist Dr Daniel Rhodes and Dr Tanja
Romankiewicz from the University of Edinburgh to participate in the excavation
of a bronze age roundhouse overlooking the beautiful coastline of Tournaig.
During this unique event participants will have the opportunity to learn more
about the work of archaeologists and their approach to “doing a dig”. You can
learn how to use archaeological tools, survey techniques, and how sites are
drawn and mapped. It's a very hands on experience which is both fascinating and
fun. There will also a public conference taking place during the week on
Thursday 27th April. This is open to anybody interested in finding out more
about archaeology where you can attend talks by international renowned
archaeologists and find out more about what archaeologists do, the prehistory of
Wester Ross, latest news in archaeological techniques and the landscape of
Inverewe over the last 2,000 years. There are a number of speakers lined up
giving short presentations throughout the day on a range of topics from 10am
until 16.30pm. During the week the public can attend the dig as many times as
they wish and stay for as long as they like. You are welcome to attend the dig
and/or the public conference. There is no requirement to attend both events –
please come to whatever interests you! There is no requirement to book a place
at the dig. There will be a shuttle bus in operation from Inverewe to the dig
site which can transport attendees to and from the site throughout the day from
10am to 4pm. The dig site is a 20 minute walk in from the drop off point over
rough, boggy terrain. All participants should ensure they have adequate footwear
and appropriate outdoor clothing as the weather can be variable and change
quickly. You should also take your own food and beverages to the site. There are
no toilets at the dig site- the shuttle bus can take people to Inverewe for use
of facilities. The Conference is limited and anyone interested in attending must
gain a pass. The passes are free; they are in place to ensure that we have
enough capacity for delegates. On Thursday evening there will be an evening
celebration at Poolewe Village Hall where attendees for both conferences are
invited to join the NTS Team for dinner and evening entertainment (Free entry).
To gain a pass for the public conference please click below. All activities
within the festival are free of charge. For further information please call
01445 712952. Only conferences must be booked in advance.
